This is where it all began, this region is known as the cradle of Portugal and is rich in history and natural beauty. It is a mountainous area. The granite from its hills was used to build many important monuments, including simple Romanesque chapels, ornate Baroque churches, and Guimarães Castle, where D. Afonso Henriques, Portugal’s first king, once lived. The area includes Porto and the Douro Valley, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Porto is famous for its historic centre and Port wine, and the Douro Valley is known for its beautiful vineyards and scenery.
